Dr. Biswajit Banerjee

    Dr. Biswajit Banerjee is Chief Economist at the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic and Professor of Economics at Ashoka University in Sonepat, Haryana. He was previously Chief Economist in the Bank of Slovenia (2014-2017) and in this capacity served as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. Dr. Banerjee is a former senior staff member of the International Monetary Fund (1982-2008), where he led surveillance and programme missions to several countries in central and southeastern Europe. Notably, he was the IMF Mission Chief for Slovenia and Slovakia during their ERM II participation and preparation for euro adoption, and also was the IMF Mission Chief for Greece just prior to the onset of the global financial crisis. He previously taught at Haverford College (2009-2014), the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (2010-2011), and University of Oxford (1977-1982).

    Dr. Banerjee read for the Bachelors and Masters degrees in Economics at the University of Delhi, and went on to obtain the B. Phil and D.Phil degrees from the University of Oxford, which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar. His research interests include empirical macroeconomics and monetary economics, international economics, labour and demographic economics, and industrial economics. He has published widely in these fields in leading academic journals, and has authored one book and co-edited three books.
